Domestically Challenged

Done, done.

Yesterday, I was determined to finish sue's Christmas (2006) socks. All I had left to do was weave in the ends and knit a heel. Piece of cake! Weaving in the ends went smoothly and I even managed to find the new episode of Gilmore Girls on CW. What luck! I should have known it wouldn't last.

The heel was hellish. There is nothing wrong with the heel pattern - I made a peasant heel using the instructions given in the Red Herring sock pattern by Cookie on Knitty. I wanted to make a peasant heel in particular because sue is prone to wearing through the heels on her socks and with this type of heel, instead of darning the hole, I can just knit a brand new heel! Anyway, the pattern is fine - problem was clearly with me.

The first time I attempted the heel, I ended up decreasing in a weird place. I'm not sure how, but one side ended up being dramatically bigger than the other and they should have been identical. Luckily I discovered this only mid-way through instead of at the end. RIP! The second time around (I love puns!) I ended up losing a stitch somewhere. This made me crazy - RIP! It took three tries.

Last night, at 2 am, I finished them. Sue, they should be in the mail after work today - if I'm lucky, they'll get to you before Boston.

Update: They will not get to you before Boston because you are leaving tomorrow and they are in an envelope on my desk. However, you should get them next week.

Almost Done!

Sue, I am almost done your Christmas socks!

I buckled down this weekend and finished all of the fake-isle. Now, I only have to knit one heel and sew in the ends! Hopefully my homework won't get in the way of me finishing them tonight!!!

The Sick/Stress Socks

So it's Tuesday after work and I've decided that since I went running at lunch, that I don't need to go to the gym. Instead, I am going to sit here in my living room, eat low fat Swiss cheese and enjoy a delicious beer that Costin left in my fridge. Fortunately, this gives me some time to catch up on my knitting.

For Easter I got both Friday and Monday off, so I went to Toronto to visit my fiance...on the bus. This is a long bus ride, but luckily I brought the sick/stress sock and sue's Christmas socks to finish. I only finished the sick/stress socks.

I started to knit these socks at the end of February when sickness forced me to stay home despite a million things I had to do at work, included a practice presentation for my sector and big boss.  Calling in sick that day made me feel like the kid in 3rd grade who didn't show up to do his book report. Anyway, when I finally woke up in the afternoon, I wanted to do some mindless knitting, having little brain capacity to do much else, while laying on the couch, watching movies. I continued to knit them while procrastinating from studying for my midterm/writing a paper and any other time I was particularly stressed by work. Hence the name: sick/stress socks.
 

When I bought both skeins of Vesper I had intended to knit one up using the Jaywalker pattern but when I knit up the Knit and Tonic colourway into a plain sock, I found that I was wearing them everyday (when it was pointed out by my boss, I knew I was addicted). So I knit the second pair the same way on US 2 needles.

Speaking of the Knit and Tonic socks...one of them got a hole in the toe at my sister's place on the weekend. While I was playing with my niece, the sock stuck in the hardwood floor and ripped. Luckily, only one stitch was sacrificed. I also managed to step in a puddle of soy sauce that I didn't notice at the time, but which was obvious when I went to darn them.

Now to finish sue's Christmas socks.

There are only 46 days until the wedding. Luckily I have already found my shoes.
